R. Elena Lie was born and bred in Indonesia and is a rising senior at Duke University. She produced a documentary bringing to light the problem of inefficient waste management systems in emerging markets, which led to starting her company CashTrash. Based in Jakarta, CashTrash leverages mobile technology and optimizes logistics and transportation to increase the transparency, value, and efficiency of the waste management system. Elena has also worked in a pig slaughterhouse, designed toilets and pioneered several social enterprises and non-profits. Fun fact: she doesn’t have a sense of smell (it’s probably why she loves waste so much).
