Magdalenafjorden and The North West Corner

In local slang called the North West Corner, this area, scattered as it is with islands, fjords and beaches has a long history of exploration. When Willhelm Barentz first found Svalbard in 1596, this was the land he first saw. The name he gave to this new land was Spitzbergen, reflecting the sharp and steep mountains in the area.

Magdalenefjorden is one of the fjords that we aim at visiting. Here you’ll experience a very important cultural heritage; a whaling station from the 16th century, including a graveyard of whalers that died during the first “oil adventure”.

We arrive in Magdalenefjorden in the morning, and will make our first Polarcirkel boat landing here.

Woodfjord and Liefdefjorden

North Spitsbergen offers a strikingly varied landscape – from the largest flat plain on Svalbard; Reinsdyrflya (the reindeer plain), to the red stone of Devonian geology, remnants of volcanoes and even the northernmost hot spring on earth. The day will be spent cruising towards the Monaco Glacier, passing a number of small islets where eider ducks nest during the summer. If we are lucky we may spot a polar bear searching for eggs here. Be on the lookout for the arched back of the occasional minke whale and bearded seals sunbathing on ice floes close to the glacier front. If the ice conditions are favourable we will sail past 80° North and towards Moffen, an island which is often host to walrus.

Kongsfjorden and New Ålesund

Also known as King’s Bay, this is the largest fjord on the North West coast of Spitsbergen, and a side fjord called Krossfjorden will also be visited during this day. The landscape varies from large tundra plains to alpine peaks, with dramatic glaciers tumbling into the ocean. Look out for the mountain Mitra – named for a ‘Mitre’ or a catholic bishop’s hat – located on the northern shore of the entrance to Kongsfjorden. In the end of the fjord you see the majestic Kongsbreen (King’s Glacier).

At 78º 55' N, Ny-Ålesund is one of the world’s northernmost year-round communities. Previously a Coal mining community, Ny-Ålesund is now an advanced High Arctic research station. In the age of early polar exploration Ny-Ålesund was the starting point for numerous expeditions towards the North Pole. Names like Amundsen, Ellsworth and Nobile are strongly linked to this place and you can still see the mast that the airship "Norge" was moored to before her departure on the first ever transpolar flight.

August 28th

Tuesday

02:30   //   Departure 1

14:45   //   Departure 2

Final day, and time to say good bye! For delegates wanting to stay and explore Svalbard, private programs can be arranged.

The Ship

MS Nordstjernen will be our hime for the expedition. She is named after the North Star or Stella Polaris, famous for helping seafarers find their way back home and the Vikings to navigate the north.

MS Nordstjernen was built for the Coastal Voyage fleet in 1956, and extensively modernised in 2000 for exclusive Arctic sailing. Today she takes explorers on adventures in the waters around Spitsbergen. Despite modernisation, she still retains the aura of an old Atlantic ship, restored to her former splendour with new brass, classic wooden interiors and all her original art. Out on deck you come extra close to the untouched nature of the Polar Arctic and with roofs over a lot of the deck space you can enjoy being outside, even in rough weather.

MS Nordstjernen is equipped with a dining room and bar, a café, a panorama lounge and a library. Inside you’ll find tiny but cosy interior and exterior cabins, the majority of which have upper and lower berths. Some have en-suite bathrooms, while others have shared bathroom facilities. All rooms and deck surfaces exhibit that old, beautiful wood.

Cabins

This grand old lady is a veteran ship with 60 small cabins and room for 110 passengers. Some cabins are inside, others outside. Most sleep two people in upper and lower berths, A, J and I cabins have private bathrooms, while D and E cabins have wash basins inside, and shared bathroom and wc facilities in the hallway. Most delegates will share cabins.

FutureTalks connects and engages people of all ages, from all backgrounds and all over the world in discussions that will define the path forward for humanity and our planet.
